Get Your Resume Right

A good resume is a marketing tool. It sells your skills and experience to potential employers.

The best resumes follow the three C's: they are concise, compelling and complete. Follow the pointers below to create a focused, energetic and memorable resume.

Pay attention to the presentation:

  • no grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors
  • neatly printed on white paper, with good margins/a good balance of white space
  • usually no more than two pages

Use concise English. Bulleted lists work better than long paragraphs.

Be honest. Provide complete and accurate information about your qualifications.

Tailor your resume for different job applications, if necessary. Change the order of your skills to reflect each job description.

Print your name, address, phone number and email address on page one.

Your name and phone number should be on all subsequent pages.

Make sure your hard skills are clearly described on page one.

Describe your accomplishments and experience. This is an opportunity to accentuate your soft skills.

There are three basic resume styles: chronological, functional and combination. Choose the format that best highlights your strengths to employers. Read about the styles by clicking on the link below:
