About Training

Merit understands the importance of a highly skilled and competitive workforce. That’s why we’ve been developing and delivering training programs for over 21 years. From construction skills to supervisory training, Merit’s training programs are designed to meet the changing needs of the construction industry and its workers.

Supervisor Training Program (STP)

STP gives construction field supervisors an overview of general supervisory principles and teaches the skills needed to effectively manage and direct workers.

Course topics include: Effective Communication, Managing Time, Meetings & Priorities, Scheduling, Negotiating Successfully, Training, Productivity & Quality Control, Performance Evaluation, Coaching Skills and Merit Supervising.

This course requires 39 hours of classroom instruction and several on-the-job assignments.

Advanced Supervisor Training Program (ASTP)

ASTP expands on the original program, providing further training in human resource issues and practices.

Modules in the 33 hour course include: Motivation & Leadership, Team Building, Conflict Management, Decision Making & Problem Solving, Labour Law & Employment Standards, Drug & Alcohol Awareness, Interviewing, Hiring & Terminating and Report Writing.

Construction Skills Training (CST)

Designed as upgrade courses for the construction industry and those looking to enhance their skills in specific areas, CST offers a series of individual courses on a variety of construction skills.

Topics offered include:

  • Scaffolding
  • Blueprint Reading I and II
  • Rigging and Hoisting
  • Surveying I and II

Management Courses

The management courses offered by Merit are each worth 5 points towards your Gold Seal. Gold Seal is a national certification program for project managers, superintendents and estimators developed by the Canadian Construction Association. Similar to the Red Seal program for journeyman tradespeople, Gold Seal is a declaration of skill and competence recognized across Canada. To become certified, candidates must have at least three years of experience and a minimum of 100 Gold Seal certification points. Points are allocated for work, trade and related management experience, education and the completion of designated industry training courses. Seminars

Merit Alberta will offer seminars on topics that are of interest to Merit members. Seminars are scheduled throughout the training year.

Topics can include: Construction Claims, WCB Claims, Customer Service Skills, Contract Law and Project Planning & Cost Control.

Construction Safety Training System (CSTS)

This computer delivered construction safety orientation covers a variety of topics such as Emergency Response, Working with Chemicals (WHMIS), Environmental Factors, Personal Physical Care, Alcohol & Drug Guidelines, Ladders & Scaffolding, and Personal Protective Equipment.
